It’s Time To Play.

It’s Time to Play is a warm, supportive, hands-on social play group designed for children aged 4–7 years who may be socially anxious, shy, neurodiverse or find imaginative and social play challenging.

This program is based on the evidence-based Learn to Play framework and incorporates AutPlay principles, providing a structured yet flexible environment where children can explore, connect, and grow.

Why Play-Based Therapy?

Play is the natural language of children — it is how they make sense of the world, communicate, and develop essential life skills. Through play, children develop:

  • Social skills – sharing, turn-taking, and cooperative play

  • Communication skills – expressing ideas, describing actions, and using play-related language

  • Cognitive skills – planning, sequencing, problem-solving, and creativity

  • Emotional regulation – recognising, managing, and expressing emotions

  • Confidence and independence – building competence through structured and free play

Unlike talk-based therapy, play-based approaches allow children to learn and express themselves through action and imagination, meeting them where they are developmentally and emotionally.

How It Works

It’s Time to Play helps children build essential social and play skills in a warm, supportive environment. Through a combination of guided, structured play and free pretend play, children practice communication, cooperation, and confidence in social interactions.

The program begins with:

  • An initial parent consultation to discuss your child’s strengths, needs, and goals. Parents are also asked to complete a pretend play assessment for their child.

  • An initial child session to conduct a play assessment and establish the starting point for therapy

Each session includes:

  • Carefully selected play props and scenes designed to support play sequences, social interaction, and the development of play scripts

  • Therapist scaffolding and modelling to support language, sharing, and turn-taking

  • Gradual reduction of support as children gain confidence and independence in play

Parents receive weekly updates about their child’s engagement and progress, along with strategies to support play and social skill development at home or in school/kindergarten.

At the conclusion of the program, a final parent session is held to provide feedback on your child’s growth, engagement, and skills development.
